The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is continuously striving towards eliminating hunger and freeing the world from the curse of poverty. In line with this ongoing effort, member countries observe "World Food Day" every year on October 16th with sincerity and importance. The theme for the current year is "Our actions are our future. A zero hunger world by 2030 is possible." Bangladesh, like other countries, is tirelessly working towards achieving a hunger-free world. The agricultural sector in Bangladesh plays a leading role compared to other sectors, making substantial contributions to the country's development.
Under the leadership of Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Honorable Minister of Agriculture Matia Chowdhury, the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh has already achieved self-sufficiency in food production. While the agricultural land area decreases each year, the sector maintains its leading role due to effective dissemination of modern agricultural technologies. Bangladesh ranks fourth in rice production, third in vegetable production, and seventh in fruit production globally. The Ministry of Agriculture's Agricultural Extension Department (DAE) plays a pivotal role in this regard.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), under the Ministry of Agriculture, is the largest service-providing institution for agricultural extension in the country. It relentlessly works towards the development of agriculture and ensuring food security. The institution provides services in over 200 crops, group-based extension services, irrigation management, seed management, post-harvest management, processing, mechanization, easy availability and marketing of agricultural inputs, creating new employment opportunities, and rural socio-economic development. Despite a reduction in the country's agricultural land, the successful dissemination of modern and sustainable agricultural technologies has increased our self-sufficiency in food production to 4 crore metric tons, with prospects of further growth. Notably, after gaining independence in 1971, the country's total food production was only 1 crore 10 lakh metric tons. However, in the fiscal year 2017-18, the country produced a total of 413.25 lakh metric tons of food, compared to 328.95 lakh metric tons in the fiscal year 2008-09.
Furthermore, it's not only food crops; the production of other crops is also consistently increasing. In the fiscal year 2017-18, the production of potatoes was 103.17 lakh metric tons, compared to only 52.68 lakh metric tons in the fiscal year 2008-09. Additionally, the crop intensity in the country has increased by 215%, compared to 179% in the fiscal year 2008-09, indicating remarkable progress in the agricultural sector.
